Record.EXE (c) 1997, shawkie E-mail: shawkie@geocities.com I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO HARDWARE RESULTING FROM THE USE OF THIS SOFTWARE OR INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN THIS OR ANY OTHER DOCUMENT. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! :-) Smile! Record.EXE works by being associated with EXE, COM, and BAT files. The filename of the EXE, COM or BAT file, along with any command-line arguments for it, are passed as command-line arguments for Record.EXE The filename, date, time and volume label are logged, and the program executed. Back up your registry! NOW! You must be able to restore it without the Windoze 95 GUI! =Installing Record.EXE= ======================= This version must be installed in a directory called C:\ERS :-( Sorry ) Place all of the files from Record.ZIP in a directory called C:\ERS Start the registry editor Find and select the key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe From the Registry menu choose Export Registry File Check the 'export range' is Selected Branch and that this branch is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe Save as C:\ERS\FIX.REG This is a safety measure in case anything goes wrong! In the right-hand pane there should be a string value named (Default) with a value, something like "exefile". Remember this value. Modify it to "exefile2" The value you have remembered should appear as a key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the left pane (eg. As HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile) Find and select it. Choose Export Registry File from the Registry menu. Save this branch as C:\ERS\EXEFILE.REG Rename the key to "exefile2" Choose Import Registry File from the Registry menu and import the EXEFILE.REG file you just saved. You should now have two identical keys: Eg. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile2 Select the "exefile2" key. Expand it. (Click on the + sign) Expand the "shell" key within it. Expand the "open" key within that. If any of these key's do not exist then you have a problem. Select "command". In the right-hand pane, modify the value for the (Default) string to "C:\Ers\Record.exe %1 exe %*" Close the Registry Editor Restart Windoze Check that you can run EXE files and that they are logged in a file called "C:\ERS\Record.txt" If Windoze cannot restart: Reboot Press F8 before Windoze starts Choose "Start in DOS Mode" Restore the registry from your backup E-Mail me! If Windoze restarts but you cannot run EXE files: Open the C:\ERS directory in My Computer. Double-click on FIX.REG Restart Windoze E-Mail Me! If all is well and you want to log BAT and COM files too then repeat the process above on the appropriate keys ( HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bat and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile for example), making sure you enter the appropriate value in the (Default) string of "command" ( "C:\Ers\Record.exe %1 bat %*" for example ) I hope it worked!
